New Secondary School in Namatala

Harpenden Spotlight on Africa are delighted to be collaborating with Promoting Equality in African Schools (PEAS) and CAUKIN Studio to design and build a new secondary school in Namatala in the west of Mbale.

The 7 acre site borders the Manafwa River and is located approximately 3km from the Bukasakya Maternity Centre site.

The secondary school campus will be large enough to educate up to 1,200 students. As well as serving the 1,000 pupils who currently attend HSOA’s primary schools it will cater for other school children in the local area.

Currently, TWO THIRDS of children in Uganda do not continue through to secondary education, with poor access to schools and high fees prohibiting many from further education.

We will keep you updated on this exciting project but in the meantime we hope you enjoy this video of Richard and Sam talking about the trees we have planted on the Namatala land over the last few years as we plan to start constructing the school.

Sam describes how trees are grown for different reasons - to provide shade, a wind break, for fruit and medicines, to control soil erosion or purely to be ornamental.

The video shows the beauty of the land and its location.

We Doubled Your Christmas Donations!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated via the Big Give website and supported our Christmas 2021 Appeal.

We are delighted to report that we reached our target of £11,500 which will be doubled and go towards funding our Health Clinic and team of Community Health Promoters. Your generosity will provide health education, clean water, increase immunisation coverage and maternal care in an impoverished area in Uganda with high infant and maternal mortality.

Spotlight Film Up for Award!

Our friend and supporter Philip Lee Harvey made a beautiful film for us last year which is now up for an award. Congratulations Philip Lee Harvey.
